Sometimes it's hard for a man to admit his ignorance, but I'll ask a question that is probably easily answered by 99+% of the people in this forum. What is shot group size?

Say I shoot a three shot group and it is measured to be two inches. Is the two inches:

a)The diameter of a circle connecting the centers of the three holes?

b)The diameter of a circle connecting the outside edges of the three holes?

c)The distance between the centers of the two holes furthest apart?

d)The distance between the outermost edges of the two holes furthest apart?

e)The radius of a circle connecting the centers of the three holes?

f)The radius of a circle connecting the outside edge of the three holes?

I would say the answer is "D", The distance between the outermost edges of the two holes furthest apart.

That's the way we measured our groups in the military.

That is still the way I do it.

Well, that would give me tighter groups, considering I use .735 round balls.

And to think, all these years I've been doing it the hard way.

All NRA matches use the center to center method, including NRA santioned military matches. you can measure center by eye, or you can be more exact by measuring from outside to inside of the two farthest apart if the holes are not too ragged. The old timers often used string measuring by putting sticks in the holes and running a string around the sticks in all the outer holes. I don't know of anybody doing that today, unless their's a special type match at Friendship or elsewhere.

Wick,
Thanks for setting me straight. My guess would have been b). I suppose it comes from reading too much Louis LaMour. "You could have covered all three holes with a silver dollar."

Ya see Musketman? Y'r a better shot than you thunk n' by darn near 3/4 of an inch to boot!!

As my daddy always said "a lil learn'n cant hurt ye none".

Hey Wick, That's called a peg shoot and we do it at the club from time to time at our monthly shoot. It's a lot of fun but you need a lot of good end cuts from logs to make sure everyone has one to shoot at. We cut ours about 8" thick and I only saw one time where someone shot it in half. Take care, Rick.
