Wanted to make my own tow, so I tried the cheap route: buying a pound of flax seed from a health food store. I wasn't sure if the stuff would sprout, so I planted a small patch just to see if the seed was viable, and what the sprouts looked like. Boy, stand back! The flax just leapt out of the soil. For $1.50, I have enough seed to grow a small forest of this stuff. The health food store variety is a shorter variety than the classic fiber flax grown for making linen, but will produce gobs of shorter fiber and plenty of tow.
