Hey John, this is a tricky subject, as there are certainly plenty builders on this site.
I'd suggest looking here: Click here
this is a list of contemporary builders by the Contemporary Longrifle Association; Understand this is only a compilation of names, and does not rank them in any way.

Nor is it a complete list of the guys who are actually doing this for a living. :winking:

John, go to the links forum on this website, then click on muzzleloading waepons. The section contains many things such a production gun sales, kit makers and so on but also gunmakers. Many have websites and you can get a fair idea of abilities and prices as well as contact directions. The Contemporary Longrifle Assoc. has a vast listing and some of these have websites as well. Neither the links or the Longrifle Assoc. is judgemental so the finding part is up to you but reseaching the thing is half the fun.

John,
What type/style gun are you looking for? Many builder specialize in specific types of guns.
As far as the legality of this type of service, there is none that I know of. Normally you give them enough money to buy the parts and the rest upon delivery.

Amen to that! Especially when you are looking for a specific type that involves the 'details' to be correct.

There are some mighty good reasons for this and the profit will speed delivery time... or at least the priority of being built.

Also... you need to see some of his/their work... and not just one rifle. Along this line, when you are speaking of A LOT OF MONEY, you might want to hold some of the finished rifles in your hands. Pictures just don't cut it when you are speaking of correct weight, balance and the ease with which the firearm comes to your shoulder.
