I have a .45cal Penn Rifle, and am looking for a pattern to make a gun sleeve.Any Ideas????
Thanks :hatsoff:

I moved your topic to the Craftsman forum area because this is the place where all of the folks who make their own stuff gather.

I'm sure they will be able to give you more ideas than you could ever wish for.

I haven't built a gun sleeve but I did buy several a few years back at the Western Nationals.

They are made out of heavy wool blankets, some with fringes but most without. Some are striped but most are one solid color.

They all are longer than the rifles and have a large end flap that folds over and is tied shut with medium weight rope.

I have made two so far ,one out of calico, one out of ticking .lay a piece of the material you are going to use out on the floor, it will need to be longer than your gun by 12 inches + .Place the gun on the material , fold the material over the gun , pin the two sides together in a shape that you like, make sure you allow for a sewing seam, a flap on one side that will fold over the opening with a tie fixed to the flap.SWEET TALK YOUR LOVELY WIFE TO SEW IT UP FOR YOU.

I use the cotton cloth because it is cheap and the cotton soaks up the gun oil you use so after a short time its like wraping your gun in an oily rag .No rust

I make mine out of old blankets or pieces of white canvas depending on degree of protection desired. Just lay the rifle on your material, fold over the rifle and allow about four to six inches for seams and clearance. :idunno:

I was thinking going all out....
may buck skin.....soft leather???
what do you all think?? :hmm:

Just cutting to fit yer needs should'nt be hard. But, if you use wool blanket, keep in mind they look neat walking around ronny. Are OK for transport. But do not keep yer rifle in for very long. They seem to look for moisture and will do nasty stuff to the iron real quick.
Lookin' neat walking around ronny is the only thing they are good for, IMHO.

Covers are OK for transport, but not very good for storage. If you want a cover for storage, they make treated gunsocks. If you are storing in a dry place, a place like "The Log Cabin Shoppe" have plain canvas sleeves for that purpose. They're cheap, and even cheap enough to cut one up as a pattern to make a nice blanket/buckskin sleeve. If you want a blanket style carry cover check out thrift shops like Goodwill for used blankets for material to make them. Just my thoughts.

a sail makers trick is an office stapler. place your gun on the blanket and cut a piece of cloth or leather 3 or 4 inches to big. turn the cover wrong side out and then staple just outside where you need to sew. this can be done with the item inside.sew then trim edges to remove all staples. turn inside out. make it a little large if in doubt as it is easy to sew a little smaller but tuff to add to.

So...wool blankets are not a good thing.
Is buck skin ok then???
Wool blanketing is fine, as is buckskin. Stay away from canvas and other similar materials as they can wear the finish.
