With the price of decent custom and semi custom muzzle loaders being so high would it be out of hand to ask for references from past customers ?

That would be the prudent thing to do! Also get a written contract that protects you both.

IMHO,
It is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask for. I make bamboo flyrods for sale and always keep a list of past customers handy for references. Also, the builder should be able to provide photo's of past builds. A custom built rifle is a big investment for some of us, and some reassurance of the quality of the product should be expected.
