I haven't posted in a long while, so this may not be news.

Colonial Williamsburg has finally put their "Gunsmith of Williamsburg" on DVD. I've bugged them for a long time to do this since I had two of the same show on video tape - one with bad sound, one with bad video.

It was originally produced in 1969, but this is a great way to see how firearms were made from scratch. Lots to learn. I never knew the barrels were made from a flat piece of stock.

Go to their website and find the phone number for their bookstore since the DVD doesn't show up on their site.

Thanks for the info and your persistence, I have the same video mine is a good copy but my VCR is bad and I cant find any around here for sale that work for more then a movie or two before they brake.

The whole Williamsburg crafts video's are great. Plus they all were made back in 1969 through around 1973. Walter Cronkite narrated some of them. It's good to hear that they are getting them redone in DVD.

That Gunsmith video features a "young" Wallace Gussler. And there is a surprising amount of blacksmithing shown in it - forging up all the metal parts, and then casting some brass parts.

Gunsmith at Williamsburg
Hammerman at Williamsburg (the blacksmith)
Silversmith at Williamsburg
Cooper at Williamsburg
Basketmaking in Colonial Virginia

And then there is a Musical Instrument video that I don't have, as well as the Naturalist video. But I did pick up the:

Forged in Wood - Building Anderson's Blacksmith Shop video.

The whole series is well worth it - in either vhs or dvd.

Mikey - that grumpy ol' German blacksmith out in the Hinterlands

p.s. Yes, a spiral welded barrel is much harder to make well with traditional methods/materials. With that long tapered flat bar, you end up with one long forge weld.
