i think very nice is an understatement , if every knew how much work has to go into something like that , it is fantastic

Thanks ya'll I do appreciate it. I had this laying on the bench for a while trying to decide whether to file grooves, engrave a little or do punch work. Got tired of thinking about it a just left it plain.

Nice, what did you use to make the bowl? Do you have a mandrel set up to form it, or did you turn it or simply make it free-hand?

Whoa, that baby is purdy! I like it just like it is. I think Paul said it the other day in another post, sometimes "less is more"!

Anvil. Terrific looking piece. I particular like the pewter end caps. How are they fixed to the wood?
I like being able to enjoy the fiddleback of that wood and the rich tones of the grain. If you carved it, or covered any of it with inlays, no how elegant, or delicate, it would detract from the simple elegance of this hawk. I found myself simply letting out a deep breath when I first saw this picture, and smiling because i wanted to reach out and touch both the wood and the metal.

We need to be thinking of these kinds of gear as sculptures, rather than a working tool. Any sculptor is ecstatic if the first reaction of his audience is that they they want to touch his work and feel its texture. Nice job. Thanks for sharing it with us all.

Loyd, I rough turn the basic shape and file the grooves and indentions. I find I do better this way because I am no machinist and have messed up a few bowls/polls in the lathe.

Paul,The way that I attach the pewter is by putting several brass screws with the heads sticking out enough for the pewter hold to. I add a little solding paste to screw to be sure the melted pewter sticks.

Boy Anvil, we ought to get together, we could "rule the world " . Nice hawk, one of these days I'll have to try to make a folded hawk...Bud
