I finshed this one up today. Forged from 1 in.square spring off old cultivator. Turned and filed hammer poll. Curly maple handle stained with aqua fortis and tung oil finish. Pour in place pewter end caps.

That's a beautiful job. Anyone would be proud to wear that on thier side.
How did you harden the hawk blade? I'm still in the begining stage of hawk building and I'm still learning about hardness especially on hawks.

Loyd, The way I temper my hawks is with a torch. I heat till non magnetic and quench in trans fluid preheated to 130 to 140 degrees. I don't do a long soak time after reaching non maganetic because I use mostly simple carbon steels (10XX). I draw the cutting edge back to blue with the same torch and the hammer poll back to straw. The spikes I do not temper. I always normalize 3 times before quenching. I have done a couple hundred hawks this way over the years and have not had any problems.

Very nice work, Stuart. Thank you for the description of your hardening and tempering methods.
