Handgonne finish?

Anyone have any suggestions on what color to finish the steel on a handgonne? I saw a beauty in the pre-flintlock section that was dark black. I was thinking of rust browning to the point of pitting to give it an aged look, then boiling to make it even darker. What say ye? Any ideas?
