The little flashlight from O`Reilly Auto Parts has been mentioned in several posts. I was at an O`Reilly's today and picked one up for $10 (batteries included).

They're pretty neat and a "must have" for those pawn shop visits. In addition to using it as a bore light, it will be my "walk to the stand" light for early morning hunts.

Diameter is a tad under 1/4".

Glad you like the little bugger. They do have many uses. Mine see a lot of use. They are a little bright when dropped down the bore you have to look in the bore a little from the side not straight down it.

I put it down the bore bulb first. There's plenty enough light from the holes around the circumference of the front of the light to see the bore real well.

Picked up a couple of those myself when they came out...the biggest attraction to me was it would fit down into the small calibers.

But the intensity of the little light is incredible...I taped a small piece of red plastic over the end to cut some of the intensity when using it as a bore light...was thinking of trying a coat of fingernail polish next...but will try it reversed with the light down next

Can you shine the light down the bore of a .50 cal rifle to see the face of the breech plug, or does it not work well for that?

In the local O`Reilly Auto Parts store the “Super Ray” was not on display with the store's merchandise. It was kept behind the sales counter.

Yes you can shine the light down the bore of a .50 and see the breech face ( if it is clean ) A dirty breech face won't reflect any light. What you will see is a small ring at the base of the barrel about 1/16" wide with a hole in the center. The hole is the patent breech and the only way to see it is to light it through the touch hole or remove the nipple and shine the light through it.
This light will work down to .30 cal.

Yes, its very bright and you can see the breech...and the good news is since its so thin, you have good visibility looking past the light.

If it is too bright remove one of the batteries and replace it with a piece of metal with a similar shape like a nail. The batteries are 3 volts each so one battery will run the thing on half power. I just tried it with a paper clip and it is dimmer with only one battery.
FWIW

Just keep in mind a bore light can be VERY misleading. You can take a bore with rust in it & oil it really well & swab it with real tight oiled patches & with a bore light it will shine like a brand new barrel. The rust glazes over with the oil saturation & pressure on the rust areas.

I had several old shotgun barrels sent to me that were supposed to be good & No Rust, and were just shiny as all getout inside, with a borelight dropped in them.

I cleaned them well with a bronze bore brush & you would not believe the huge rusted pits & places that just "appeared" . :shake:

So don't go by what just a light glare shoes. Anything remotely suspicious could be a major issue.... :hmm:
