I am trying to decide on which unit to hunt this year for the CO muzzleloader season. I recently started a new job that might have me missing the hunt, so I want to cow hunt a unit that doesn't require a preference point in the event I can't make it.

These units caught my attention for a number of reasons, but I have never hunted in these areas and wondered if anyone out there has.

I am from CO so I am familiar with the topography in all these areas. Just wondering where to hunt in the unit.

Thanks!

I have not hunted in the units you asked about. Have you checked the statistics info posted on the DOW website? I would start there, and then use "Google Earth" to narrow down a few areas that look promising to start scouting on foot.
There are a lot of great hunting areas you can hike into right off major highways that most people overlook.

I just looked at the preference point results for units 1,66,67 and 201. If you are planning on hunting elk, you will have to apply for a cow license. The bull tags in all of these units require points (Unit 1=9 pts, U66=3 pts, U67=2 pts and U201=14 pts). All of the units had people draw cow licenses with zero points. Check the statistics page to see the breakdown of the number of licences issued, against the number of applicants. Even if a number of people draw a tag with no points, there are usually quite a few that do not draw. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I actually looked at the pref points insert in this month's Colorado Outdoors to get to those units. It is a cow hunt that I am planning. I can't afford to mount a bull at this time in life so it is just for the meat.

Are you going to make it out this year?

Regards,

I will be hunting this year, but I am going archery instead of muzzleloader. I picked up a '69 Bear Kodiak Hunter recurve that I will use this year.

I hunted unit 66 just outside of Lake City for a number of years. Had pretty good luck back then, have not been on an elk hunt since 1993.

Rat Trapper -

I decided upon unit 66 after looking at the maps. I found what looks like some pretty good country from what I can see. I will go up this summer for a scout to confirm.

I do have to admit how ironic it is to use advanced mapping software and Google Earth satellite photos to prepare for an Elk hunt using a primitive weapon perfected in the 19th century.

Thanks for the feedback!

Kentuckywindage-

Thanks for the tip. I have often wondered about that area north of Gypsum, but didn't know it well enough.

I don't see a whole lot of public land on the map (but my maps don't cover BLM designations). What is the access like? I actually prefer to walk a bit and get away from the crowds.

I ended up going with unit 66, but I'm always interested in scouting new country.

Take Care,

are you trying to hunt this year? Our application deadline was April 3rd.
I guide unit 66 and 67 very good hunting but it is a trophy draw area. I would go state wide cow muzzleloader and hunt a non draw area.
If you didn't get your application in call the DOW and find out when they are giving out leftover tags.
:hatsoff:

Greenmtnboy;

I put in for 66 on a cow hunt before the deadline. They weren't calling for pref. points for cow, but I saw you needed a significant pref. point total for bull. It looks like last year ~64 applied and 55 got cow tags.

It sounds like you have had some success up there? Will you be there for muzzleloader season?

Thanks,

No, I muzzleload hunt unit 55 it's my back yard and I am just meat hunting so there is plenty of cows right off my deck

I have hunt in unit 55 several times.
I seen the biggest bighorn sheep ever there 6 years ago. Never seen one as huge on any calendar or in any magazine . Actually I seen probably a dozen or more nice Rams, and of all places it was one day when we were just giveing the legs a rest and were up by the radio tower in the Almont Triangle Area.
Usually I hunt Boston Peak area or Cement Mountain. Good luck on the up comeing season.
I have put in for unit 66 before but never lucky enough to draw a tag for that unit yet but will keep trying

Cement MT was my backyard for eight years when I first moved to Gunnison. I lived up Cement creek. I took many elk and deer off that Mt with my mule. I killed a very large bear up there in 94. Now I pritty much hunt Fossil wilderness and Taylor Park.
The outfit I guide for just bought the Permit for Cement Mt,Docter Park ect. We got some decent bulls out of there last fall.
