Etsy is great. Lots of people don’t know how to set up a website and this allows them to sell. I’ve never had a problem there — ever. Get the app for off on your phone or it works great off a desktop.

Some people would be mad if ya hung ‘em with a new rope.

I dobknow a seller that stopped using Etsy. It's nothing more than a website/software location providing a broad host marketplace for a high fee. It's kind of what Amazon is now. Amazon doesn't stock all that stuff in their own warehouses.

The woman I know makes great wood reed products like quivers, pack baskets, gardening baskets, etc. But her business dropped because of the fees she had to pay Etsy.

Obviously I passed on the hat above, but I ordered this one from a place I’ve dealt with before. This might pass for an early 19th century. Thoughts? 4” crown.

With the 4" crown, yours is much like John Stetson's original hat, the "Boss of the Plains". Although a bit past period, the same type hat was made for years before. Stetson used that design because it was a commonly accepted and liked style. Mine is very similar, with a 3 1/2" crown. I'm sure there was a fair amount of crown height variations. They are right on the money for being correct.

I bought the Lil'Griz Bridger hat from him around 6 years ago, had no problem, perfect fit however I had access to an actual 'hat sizer' (measure twice , cut once).
It's been a fine hat, well made, holds up well. Worth the money and wait in my opinion...don't know why some have issues with the site - when I wrote them a question they always replied within a day or so.
I finger wove a simple band for Summer and in Winter I have a mule deer fur band to add weight for wind.
This little gal should grow into it just fine when I move on:

I like how the more recently-made Westerns are much more authentic; esp. the hats, like in the Open Range movie, etc., are more realistic looking than the Hollywood costume supply stuff in the B-Westerns, which bug the heck out of me when every regular Joe-guy has a gun belt strapped way down on his leg, way below the belt-line; it would be muscle-tiring to wear such a thing all day every day like they portray. Kevin Costner & Co. really moved the bar higher!

Ha. I have a lot of people on the ignore list. Mostly snarky know it alls. Often people from Australia or the UK or New Zealand. Texas too. Life is too short to let grumpy people bring you down.

It IS easy to buy. You’re cutting off your nose to spite your face. Not my problem, it’s yours. You continue to lose out on good stuff because you can’t figure tech things out and are too prideful to ask for help. I have a friend the same way… hates passwords. Oh well. As I keep telling people “It ain’t the 1900’s anymore”

Amazing how a guy who doesn't know me at all decides what I'm all about. Like I said above life's too short to waste on..........enjoy the silence of my ignore list too. In the words of Curly Bill "Bye".

And it ain't my problem, I bought a hat just not from Etsy.

Lil Grizz says he can custom make just about any hat you wish, just send him a photo and description. I have not tested him on this, however I do hat a hat in mind once I have the funds again - nothing 'custom' comes cheap these days.

Personally I think the reason he has no Shopping Cart on his Web Page is because he himself is not tech savvy. By using Etsy he can let them handle all credit card processing and he just focuses on fulfilling orders, he probably has no one in the family tech savvy to deal with it and to hire someone would cost more then what Etsy takes for their cut.
Further by not dealing with a personal e-mail through his Web Page again he already has Chat on Facebook (where he is very active) and an Etsy address....I know all too well the hassle of trying to keep up with more then three or four methods of communication.

Sure he could satisfy more people by utilizing direct access through a personal website, but would not get all the 'visibility' he gets through Etsy and Facebook and at a fraction of the overhead.

I do not know why some have problems with Etsy, nor those with Track of the Wolf or Log Cabin Shop. I do know what I don't like are places that take an order with a "8-12 week" estimated turn around then 7 months later still give excuses or out in out ignore you request for an update status....especially when you give them the benefit of doubt from past dealings.
Lil Grizz, for me, was on schedual and always prompt with replying (unlike another hat maker whom I will Never do business with again...and a leather maker, and a clothing maker - none of which used Etsy as soul form of payment....oh, and refuse PayPal at all costs; I will do without)

Well, since it was brought up...
No FB or PP for me. Bad experience with both.
But I love Etsy. Many fine crafters on there. And Etsy sticks to selling, whereas FB seems to want to have their fingers in everyone's pie. Business's that don't want to own and operate a real website can use FB. And FB has hit a niche for sure.

I've only had one bad experience on Etsy and that was a holster I waited two weeks over the estimated 4-6 weeks, so eight weeks, and the guy hadn't even started it yet. Quick painless refund though. Every business has a glitch or two.

But my peeve is Taylor's newly redone website. Between their top banner and bottom Cookies thing I only have about 30% of my laptop's screen usable. I can see just one row of guns at a time. I find myself surfing Cimarron a lot more now. All in the name of progress I guess.

I will only bend with the changing times so far.

But there's some good leads on hats in this thread.

I was pretty frustrated with Etsy as you probably surmised but I’m over it now. There is a lot of nice handmade stuff on there. Some of the shooting pouches are beautiful. Not likely I’ll try it again but you never know when the right pouch might come along.

The only one I’ve ever had trouble with was log cabin. Sure hard to read, but they’re getting better. When the net first happened, Dixie’s sure was just horrible. Not too bad now. Web work can be hard. I spent my 2 days off coding to change a site over to be mobile friendly. Just a lot of scut work. Looking good though and only 6-7 pages to go. Then some tweaking. Wish I was a programmer and could understand databases.
