And as a advanced collector and bag maker...

Somebody define and quantify the Lamuel Lyman bag.

Two things strike me about the bullet pouch. In making the contemporary copy, Bibb appears to have molded the front panel since the bag was sewn outside rather than reversed.

And, Bibb left out the holes from the ball passage! If t'were me making a copy, those holes would have been duplicated for sure. Best part of the whole story.

One of the best on this pouch is our own Capt.Jas. One can view his interpretation of this pouch and other pieces of his outstanding period leather work by scrolling down at this link: http://fowlingpiece.blogspot.com/

James has written the original was made as a belt pouch, not as an over the shoulder pouch.

He uses a rolled leather button rather than the brass in the one Zonie linked. And there's a bunch of tooling I don't see in the shoulder bag.

I wonder about those differences over and above the belt vs. shoulder versions.

Any photos of the original for comparison?

The original "Lyman" bag has an uneven flap with impression tooling that follows those lines. It also has tooling on the front body. IIRC one belt strap is still present. Not sure if it was a shoulder bag prior or not but prolific use of belt bags is known. Original button is anyone's guess. A rolled leather one is certainly good for early.
There are quite a few old bags of similar design and a couple are shoulder bags. The Lyman bag is supposed to have documentation to 1755. I don't know if it's just the story we have seen in print or more. Fact is, a simple flat sewn type as this is safe and plausible for a plethora of time frames.

Interestingly, the only photo of the original I can find is a snap shot from a book and found on the ALR where you two have had this same conversation in Sept of 2011

Since photo bucket is no longer an option...it's hard for me to post pics. The Lyman bag seems to have a lot of repeated posts on the Internet that has given it volumes of references. Tons of Internet citations are a wonderful thing. But where is the documentation and provenance...or even unbroken chain of evidence to support those hundreds of citations?

I think most people have accepted that since it was featured and published in Clash of Empires and it was promoted by academic researchers and such that it is legit maybe is my guess.
Interesting as I have been having a conversation elsewhere on this same artifact just yesterday.
