I cannot speak for any other tomahawk maker but a friend of mine gave me one made by Beaver Bill. It's one of their basic tomahawks. The handle was not finished. However, it's one tough hawk.
I wanted to stain and finish the handle with true oil. So I tried to tap the bottom of the handle to get the head to slip free. It would not budge. Seeing that I was not damaging the handle, I pounded the heck out of the bottom end of it on the garage floor. I hit the end of it so hard that I thought that I was going to crack the concrete.
There was no way that I could put a dent in the end of the wooden handle. I knew that hickory is a tough would but didn't think it was that hard.
I called my friend and asked him why I couldn't get that head to budge off of the handle. He explained to me that Bill puts the head on the wood with a hydraulic press.
Anyway, I used some 400 grit sandpaper to smooth out the handle, stained and finished it with Tru-Oil. I haven't done any throwing of the tomahawks but highly recommend Beaver Bill's work. Even though I have one of his creations, my friend has quite a few of them. They hold an incredible edge and I may get a few more.
Here's his web site and the link to the tomahawk that I do have.
