This ain't the one I called in, but he ended up pay'n a deadly price for hang'n with the big boys.

I been hunting my public land area in SW Fl. and called in one the other day but he busted me soon as he stepped into sight. He was about 40yds and too far to shoot.
It was my fault because I told myself when he started coming in I needed to move to a spot that would put him right at 25yds. when he broke into the open..but I didn't do it and it cost me the bird.'
Yesterday a bird was gobbling not very much and I finally got him to come in by doing just a little calling. I saw him soon as he got to about 50yds. and again when he was sneak'n to wards me at about 40yds..was a real good long beard. However he was with a bunch of small Jakes and I lost sight of the big gobbler. When I saw him he was going towards and opening and I moved the gun to it and was waiting for him to step out at about 25yds. He didn't a Jake did and started eyeball'n me and I bout died try'n to hold the gun up till he went on. The Jakes started taking too much notice of me and one was going to spook as it came right on top of me..so I had no choice but shoot it. Never did see the big gobbler again. Will try to hold out for a bigger one now...although I'm proud of all of them with flintlock..especially this dang cylinder bore. Didn't get my wood and barrel for my new flinter till a wk before turkey season so will be next yr. before I use it.

Congrats on a nice bird. Our season doesn't start till April 15. I got my new fowler day before yesterday and got a load worked up for it yesterday, so i think i am ready for them.

Awesome :thumbsup:Nice gun ya got.How many turkeys can ya get where your at? I aint never got a turkey.Maybe this is the year I get one.

congrats and Waidmanns Heil. What cal. and charge did you use?

Greetings from Germany

Congratulations on taking a fine bird, Hoyt. Can't wait to see a big one now that you are going to wait for one of those. Any turkey taken is a trophy, and any one taken with a flintlock smoothbore is a double trophy. Great picture, and interesting story.

Congratulations! Any turkey taken with a flinter is a wonderful trophy! :hatsoff:

Thanks for the congrats..just came home from the woods..been at it every day since March 17th..and will go back early in the morn. for tomorrow's hunt. Living in a tent..no running water..wash in a lime pit every few days, or so.
Anyway..I killed that turkey with my Virgina .62cal smoothebore loaded with 80grs. Goex 2f, 3 thin overshot cards over the powder, two 1/8" lubed felt wonder wads, inside a rolled up and glued Post-it note paper. Then I pour 100grs nickle-plated No. 6's topped off with 20grs. nickle-plated No. 4's in the cup 1-5/8oz. total. I slit the top of cup down about 1/2" every 3/8" or so around and cut even as I can with the top of shot. Then drop down the barrel and use one thin overshot card on top.
I had another one not open a couple of days ago on a nice gobbler at about 10yds. Not a feather.
We are allowed two gobblers.
It was my fault it didn't open as I used a load I had in a quickshot and had left it just a hair long so as to be able to grab the paper to pull the load out of the plastic quickshot. It was also tight going down the barrel and I had bad feelings about it. Just a reminder to all that hunt...DON'T LET ANY LITTLE THING GO..THEY ALWAYS COME BACK TO BITE YOU SOONER OR LATER.
