I've been trying to research and find out why someone would put these gold metal dots on an old 1863 springfield musket. So far I can't seem to find any information on it, so I thought I would try here and see if anyone knows why someone would have done that.

Maybe it was done to help distinguish it from other muskets for owner identification if the unit stacked their rifles in camp
That very well could be possible. The story i was given from the previous owner, was that this rifle was used during the Civil war, and that some soldiers would mark their rifles to indicate each kill that rifle made. But, its just a story with no way to validate that claim, and can't seem to find similar examples that might indicate what those marks are.
