A buddy who works at a scrapyard just saved an old revolver from the big meltdown. I told him I'd find out something more about it. It is a 31 caliber six shot Colt revolver, serial number in the 265000 vicinity, all numbers matching. The barrel is 6", and the loading lever is in place. On the top flat of the barrel is a line of writing, but I couldn't make it out without a magnifier.

It lacks the grips, and the 2 backstrap screws.
The finish on the steel is completely gone, the brass is still brass colored. The cylinder still rotates, and the mechanism works, but I begged him not to do that again.

What model revolver has he rescued, what might be a ballpark value (he paid $20!!!), and what should he consider as far as restoration? Also, what year was it manufactured? Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like an 1849 Pocket Model Colt. Is it actually six shot or five shot?

Does it look the same as the one Widow's Son recently posted:

Colt 1849 Pocket Models were made in the USA and England. English ones had a Colt London barrel address on top of the barrel rather than USA markings. This effects value. Your buddy's Colt serial number of 265xxx is out of the range of London Pocket Models.

Here is a serial number chart including various Colt percussion revolver models:

As to value; good crisp closeup pictures would really help i.d. what your buddy has. You might also search closed auctions on the various gun selling websites to see prices realized for actual sales.

As to restoration; that is in general not a good idea. Replacing missing parts/screws can be o.k.
