hey guys , was finishing a build this morning , everything going great ..mark the touchhole drilled it buttoned the lock on and thats when i lost my breakfast.. the touch hole is slighjtly visible above the closed frizzen...i cant believe i did this usually mark the flashpan horizontal and drill at the intersection.. dont know what happened.. question is can this be repaired or do i need to lower tha barrel???wasnt sure if this hole could be soldiered ,welded or am i buyin a new barrel???

I would tap the hole and loctite a bolt in it, then file flush and redrill.....you may have to redo your blue or rust finish tho...

My rifle came with the same prob. I soldered a piece of half rounded and tapered steel rod on the side of the frizzen. That was maybe 12 years ago. Still there, hardly noticable, works fine.

roy ,no liner just drilled a 1/16 hole..just a touch above the frizzen.. if the frizzen would not close all the way ,just a touch from closing ,,it would cover it...i have never had such a sickening feeling in my belly.. was hoping i would plug and soldier over...let me know your thoughts guys,,,, thanks again...

I'm no expert, but I would drill for a liner or I would thread the old hole run a bolt in with some lock tight, then drill a new hole.

I would use a liner.. wouldn't trust locktite in that area.

It will be entertaining to not follow the same hole but it can be done.

Just a 1/16" hole or did you cone it?

I would install a liner.
Measure carefully to make sure that the diameter of the liner will eliminate the offending hole.
If it will, the hole could be plugged, and then the tap hole for the liner drilled with a twist drill in a drill press, or the hole for the liner could be put in with an end mill in a milling machine. Straight in, no problem with drill straying because of the hole with either method.

Plugging holes to make them invisible is pretty easy. Just tap it for the closest sized machine screw, slightly counter-sink the opening with a drill a couple of sizes larger than the minimum diameter drill, install the screw, file off the head, then peen the end to fill the counter sink. File off flush and sand to match the texture of the barrel. Just be careful that the drill used to counter-sink doesn't grab the hole and open it up. Just touch it with the bigger drill. I've done this on blank percussion breechplugs when drilling the flash channel. It's no different than the little touch hole screw that comes with some production guns.

But, I don't know how well this will work if a liner is used. The liner would probably cut into the threaded plug a little. I'm thinking it will be fine though, and I would do it in a heartbeat, since the liner should hold in the threaded plug in place very tightly.

If you just want to re-drill a bare touch-hole, I the above method will work great without reservations. Good luck. Bill

bothers,,,, thnak you for the support, contacted my teacher and he helped me drillout the offendinghole to a 1/4 x 28 touchhole lined instrument of warfare ... having a wonderfiul teacher is worth its weight in gold... i just need to make sure that my teacher is not in sunday services when i make the holy grail of mistakes.....thnak you for al your help and suggestions.... i appreciate it....john

Be glad it was just a 16th all you need would be a center drill a fine thread tap and a vent liner. Easily fixed oops! Trust me I know how to fix mistakes I do it all the time :surrender:

I would buy a Jim Chambers white lightning liner and the tap that goes with it. They have a finer thread than 1/4" 28. More engagement is better.
PS.- get the drill bit also.

I think he's already drilled and threaded the hole to a 1/4-28 UNF thread.

If so, it's too late to install the 1/4-32UNEF White Lightening liner.

yes zonie, the gun went to the owner last monday.. he was very happy with it.. for all i know he has shot it already... wanted to get some pics of it as this one is not mine ..
