I got a powder horn as a gift and I can tell it is an inexpensive one normally used as a prop but I want to modify it to make it work.

Quick questions

1) How can I widen out the spout so it is easier to fill and pour? Drill?

2) I have a good strap from TOW. How can I deepen the grooves around the throat of the horn so I can figure a way to tie it around?

3) I thought about looking into a mechanical spout attachment. Are these period correct for early colonial? Fur Trade era?

1) How large is the spout now? You don't want it too big or pouring will be uncontrollable. 1/4" to 3/8" tops. Yes, a drill will do the job.

2) A round rasp/file will deepen the grooves easily.

3) Mechanical spouts may have existed but generally will get more laughs than you wearing a pink tutu. Forget that notion. A simple whittled wood stopper will suffice.

Never laugh at a man with a gun, especially one that can dispense powder quickly. :D
