If you ever have a chance to visit Huntington, WV, you should definately visit the Huntington Museum of Art. The museum has the Herman P. Dean Firearms Collection, and it is absolutely amazing. Mr. Dean passed away in the late '70's, and he donated his entire collection to the museum. This collection has firearms ranging from matchlocks, wheellocks, flintlocks, percussion and cartridge firearms. There are also two firearms of particular interest. They claim that one rifle was owned by Daniel Boone, and it has "Dan'l Boone" and "Kantuckee" carved on the buttstock. They also have a rifle that was supposedly owned by Simon Kenton. It has "1775" on the barrel, however it resembles a Tennessee style of rifle. I'm not sure if these rifles were really owned by these famous gentleman, however it is interesting to see. They also have an extensive powder horn collection, and many of them are schrimshawed. I have lived in Huntington my whole life, and I had never seen this collection until last week. I'm almost ashamed to admit this. This is one of the finest collections I have ever seen, and it is only a few minutes from my house. I plan to go back, because I could spend hours studying these guns. The museum's website is www.hmoa.org
