I talked to people who said some great things about the performance of Hevi-shot, an alternative to steel shot. Anybody try it with muzzle loaders?

This article concludes: "By the ballistic calculations, it appears we now have an alternative that is not only nontoxic, but better than lead ever was."

Discussion, evaluation and review of Hevi-Shot, a relatively new shotgun ammunition that Remington and Environmetal are co-producing.

Where reloaders can find it (under "reloaders"):

I have looked into using that stuff in my 10 ga. MZ but, the price ran me off. The price for Hevi-shot in bulk is higher than a giraffe's a**. If I remember right 5 lbs is $80.00!!!

where can u buy hevi-shot in bulk at? to my knowledge it only comes in loaded shells. but thst may have changed more recently.

Check out Midwayusa.com. A good variety of Hevi-shot shot sizes. You might want to talk to your banker first. It's 7 lbs. for about $100.

You can purchase on-line Hevi-shot @ http://www.ballisticproducts.com/ in 7 lb. containers - $99.95 + shipping. They sell Bismuth also - a real steal @ $85.00 for 7 lbs. At these prices, those turkeys are just going to have to enjoy eating lead for the next several years!

arcticap,
Just a warning up front:"If your barrels are not made for steel shot, DO NOT use Hevi-shot". It is an alternative to lead but as with steel shot it does not compress. It can cause undue barrel pressures.

Now on to your question, I have tried hevi-shot in my Pedersoli 10 gauge SxS. It is one of the newer ones which can shoot steel. Now I needed to divert from the ol'ways when loading. It requires a "thick" shot cup either designed for Hevi-shot or steel. I used 1 5/8 ounces of #4 shot with a shot cup over 4 drams of 2F. This Pedersoli has the choke tubes, (sorry I bought it for the steel shot as my Bismuth was running low and it looks nice sitting next to the fowlers) and found that to shoot good patterns I needed to use the cylinder choke or improved cylinder choke. The modified and up had such a tight pattern that the room for error went out the window.

To do the pattern tests I bought a box of 3
