How many on this forum engage in historical trekking? By which I mean, going out, alone or in a group, dressed and armed and equipped in a pre-cartridge era manner, and spend some time afield this way, trying to hunt and fish and gather your grub using period tools, trying to orient yourself using period techniques, etc?

M-m-m-mostly. I don't have the clothing, but I try and hold the gear and spirit close. Perhaps in time. I try to be pretty faithful with my shooting gear and cutlery, if not my outerwear. I think the best day in the woods possible has a fresh squirrel or bunny done over a small, flint-struck fire followed by hot tea or coffee. Deer hunting I tend to take too seriously and never stop and smell the billy boiling. I haven't done a hunting overnighter in many years, and when I did it was with a Northface 'bedroll' on my haversack. In the back of my mind I have a spot I want to try hiking to and trying my luck with a gut leader and an iron hook.

I usually hunt deer in full 18th century dress, and try to keep it as PC as my research and means permit, the research and study of period items/gear is a source of hours of pleasure in of itself and the trip is just the frosting on the cake.

I do my deer hunting 'armed in a pre-cartridge manner' using muzzleloaders, specifically now flintlocks...but then it's pretty much period specific thinsulate, gortex, good boots & wool socks. ::

As some of you have found by now, a Brand New Forum area has just been created on this very subject.
This doesn't mean you have to move this post there but, if your interested, it's there for everyone to use.
