Thanks, I'd have missed it if I hadn't seen your note. Pretty good show, what I saw of it. graybeard

Always amazes me at the apparent devil-may-care attitude of some of these explorers/trappers, returning again and again to travel through Indian occupied territory where it was well known there were extreme attitudes of hostility towards white intruders such as explorers, trappers, etc.
:hmm:

Thanks for the heads up. Good show, I just watched it. I found it somewhat distracting, though, that almost every time they showed Smith he was carrying a different rifle. One was even a lefty! Anybody else notice this?

(Dont'cha just hate nitpickers?)

Them rifles was out of the shot so fast, I had trouble tellin' if they were rocklocks.

Ya notice in one shot he has a plain ramrod with no jag on the end, and in the next shot there is a jag on it. And yep, he did a lot of rifle swappin', and yea i saw that the one he had after he finished shaving was a left hander, but all and all a pretty good show.

Not bad, all things considered for the HC.

Now hope they do a similiar program on the best of the explorer mountain men, Joe R. Walker.

Looks like an encore showing scheduled for midnight. Still time to catch it if you are not on the east coast.

With other things going on, the encore worked out good, I caught the last part on the first run, then the first part on the encore.

I just don't know why they couldn't give that Old Boy a good hat! That thing he was wearing looked like something out of Robin Hood.
Old Charlie

I noticed different rifles too, but missed the lefty.
Yeah, I thought the hat was a litle weird...and that it survived the whole 8 years he was stumbling around in the wilderness, be chased, shot at, etc.

Anyhow, that's still by far the kind of show I prefer...a documentary narrated by historians with occasional scenes dubbed in for visual effect...instead of a full length "hollywood movie" that attempts to portray how something was.

Good show, I enjoyed it! :front: One rifle he carried looked like a Pedersoli and the other, a bit more "authentic-looking", kinda looked like the Dixie Gun Works Tennessee rifle (and it had the grease hole).

Yes, that was a DGW "Poor Boy" one good shot of it when
they were hit by the Mojaves on the Colorado River.
Where were all the horses? They didn't walk across the
west.
One thing about Smith, if you run with him your life
was short. He lost 36 men in his short life. They said
he was worth $500,000 in todays dollars. Who got the
loot after he died? Maybe his brothers.

I missed the first 20 minutes. I've always been interested in his story. He was born in Bainbridge, NY. Only about 10 miles from where my Mother was born and an hour from my home. Kind of a hero to me from way back.

I watched i too.I may need corection here so feel free except for the spilleng.I caught a glimps of a NW trade gun at the part where his guy's were trading with the mexicans,And erler at the part where old Jed was telling that guy to not let the Indeans into the camp I saw What looked to me like that officers fussle thing that Loyelest arms sells.I am not so familer with thees guns as you all but I am trying.I mean I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that they wernt standing around leaning on remington 700's with Glocks and S.O.G. knives stuck in there belts.

I watched it too and like it. Too bad Into the West was not as good and somewhat accurate as the indian clothing on a the Historical channel and their small budget. The beadwork and shirts was great.

well i liked it over all but one of the historians a PHD " I will not stoop so low and name him " is the professor of history at Boise state University .
I have heard him speak and have chatted with im at our club meetings .
IMO he's an arrogant A@# and having his skinny butt popping in and out drove me crazy .
Over all between my wife saying ; Charlie relax ,every time I saw him . I think I enjoyed it , now that I now what to expect I will have to see it again
