What is a good method to use to hold horns while filing, sanding, schrimshawing, and buffing. Other than tying a live one to a fence post and doing it before cutting them off, they never seem to want to stay in the right position for me to work on it in the area I need to. So grab this by the horn and let me know a better way to hold them.....PLEASE??? :hmm: :hmm:

bowjock my method is to take a piece of soft carving wood {basswood pine etc.] any scrap big enough to sand or whittle down to fit snugly into the butt of the horn I do this before i cut the but off square. put a couple small nails thru predrilled holes. make it as long as ya need to clamp in vise or whatever ya need to hold it when your done with scrimshaw or scraping remove plug cut off square and final polish

I use Dave K's method of sand bags. Don't fill them full...leave enough "play" in the sand to push it around the horn to cradle it then go to it! :results:

If your lucky enought to get the raw horn with the Hard bone still in it, use that after you boil it out ..you will need to cut a flat on two sides at the big end so you can put it in a vice. You could also use a 2x4 clamped in a vise. a strap two to three feet long looped. ( try 2" webbing) to use put the horn on the 2x4 put the strap over the horn put you foot in the strap, push down with foot...the horn will stay put! :results:
