Im looking for a good quality holster but have found a small problem. Every website and catalogue ive looked through has two types of holsters.

Holsters designed for modern revolvers, that cost anywhere from 30 dollars to 100 dollars. And holsters desigend for percussion revolvers. those start at 40 bucks for flap holsters, and go higher then the cost of gasoline.

SO im wondering what modern revovlers have the same over all shape of a 51 navy? Because if i can get a nice 30 dollar holster for say a 8 inch barreled vaquerro, i want to know if my gun will fall out.

Bezoar-Have you tried Cabela's,Oklahoma Leather, possibly October country?Modern holsters generally will not fit(to large). If I remember right,Cabela's had some C/B holster for around 30 bucks. These are fairly inexpensive, and can be made to fit almost as good as custom ones.Hope this helps...Respectfully Motanadan

If you are handy at craft work why not try making one yourself????? If truth be told, there really aren't any PC slim Jims out there unless you pay a couple of hundred dollars for a top of the line model.
Start with as thick a piece of leather as you can find and get some very thin suede. Use rubber cement to glue it in as a lining. You can go PC with hide glue but the rubber cement is better. BTW the originals were lined.
If you want to decorate the outside, get a Tandy's mule foot stamp and do a repetitive pattern to duplicate the old fishscale pattern.
Hickok also had a pair of patent leather( yeah, I know..Patent leather) holsters with incised stratching on them- forming various designs. Search around the net for ideas.
The best slim jims have a deep loop for the trigger on both the front and back of the holster. This means getting the belt loop right is difficult, you have to get it high enough that the gun doesn't become top heavy and start twisting around. You also have to match the belt to the loop. They should fit tightly together so there isn't a lot of slop. You often see old records of holster and belt being sold together.

Most good leather workers can handmake holsters, but it will cost you lots more than what you've looked at. Believe me, there is a lot of time put into a custom fit holster.

Any outfitter that sells cap and ball revolvers should have a selection of holsters specifically for cap and ball revolvers for less than $30. I know Cabelas does for sure. There is no need to get a holster for a modern gun and hope it fits or to pay for a custome holster. River Junction or Cabelas is a great place to start.

I agree with making your own if possible. I have made 4 holsters over the years for 4 different types of guns, onw of which is a 51 Navy. After making the holster, I wrapped my revolver in plastic wrap really good, soaked the holster really good, then shoved the revolver into the holster and used my hands to press around the frame so that the holster fits the gun and let it dry, removed the gun, unwrapped it and viola! a custom holster for a 51 Navy. Cost me about $25.00 for all the necessities but there was enough left over to make another holster for my 58 Remington and a nice knife sheath.

Triple K Leather makes a 'California Slim Jim' holster for a '51 and '58 colt. Here is the link:

Hunter makes fine holsters....I love them...you could try going to a gun store/dealer every one I've ever been to has a used holster box...I've picked some fine holsters out of the used boxes

I just revisited the Triple K site that I mentioned in a previous post. If you look at the bottom of the page their is a button that says 'Options". Clik on that and it lists the various guns that Triple K make.

They are on of my clients and their holsters are nice. All are wet molded to fit the particular model.
