Hey guys just finishing up my 40 cal rifle. I was wondering if any of you guys made your jag or a worm for the end of the ramrod? I cannot find one locally. I know i could order one, just curious what you guys use for cleaning on the ramrod. If you have made one and it works, let me know, thanks.

Worms are easy to make if you have an oxy-acetylene torch. Make it out of an old bolt of appropriate dimension. I will "turn" one end where the threads will be down to size by putting it into a drill press and filing it down. It could actually be done by just holding it in a vise and cutting/filing it down "manually". Might not be as round or centered, but that won't matter unless it's really bad off. Anyway, then I saw out the forks. File them round and make points on them, and then heat it with the torch and bend them around and around a mandrel. Designs can be turned/filed in it, if desired, and the end threaded.

I haven't made one, but I have one which was made for me. It wouldn't work for your .40, it is sized for my 20 ga., but maybe it will give you useful ideas. I use it when cleaning in the field with tow, and it is right handy. It is 4" overall, so it makes a comfortable extension to the ramrod.

Hershel House demonstrates making one in his videos, and it is done pretty much as Stophel says.

I make my cleaning jags.

I lathe turn them out of brass 40-50 thousands of an inch smaller than the bore.

I have about 30 working ram rods and dozens of blanks. Must be rr obsessed. :youcrazy: Dunno. :idunno: But, I do like to be prepared and enjoy making things. Not long ago I bought some 3/8" brass tubing from a close out sale. Yesterday, I found a .54 jag in my 'stuff' that I have no real need for. So, for the insanity :blah: of it I plan to make another ram rod. I'll turn down the jag to fit in the tube and solder it in place. I'm trying to decide what to use for a handle. Right now a brass antique door knob seems like a nifty idea. More pics when finished.
