Does anybody know if people can homestead anywhere in the USA? Has that plan been abandoned or is it still viable in Alaska? :hmm:

I found this...

There are no longer federal lands in Alaska available for homesteading. All federal land programs relating to homesteading, homesites, headquarters sites, and/or trade and manufacturing sites within Alaska expired in 1986 as a result of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 [FLPMA]. Under this act, Congress directed the government to manage remaining public lands for long-term retention. Therefore, BLM has no land disposal program.

Homestead'n in Alaska has been tied up in litigation for many years last time I checked (1990)!!

I have a vague recollection of seeing this on some TV special about modern-day "pioneers" in the upper reaches of MN. A quick google on homesteading + minnesota found tons of junk but some gov sites that have some info you might find useful...

Check out the application at: Homestead app

Found the procedure manual HERE

And the FAQ

Good luck, sounds like fun. Cold, but fun.
