Hey guys, I own a TC 50 cal white mt carbine and have just started hunting with it in the past two years. So far I'm ok with it as far as performance goes. Should I be content with this as a hunting rifle or in your opinion would I be happier in the long run with something else. Whitetail deer are the primary game here in Wisconsin with shots at 75 yds or less.

Been a long time for me but when I used a T/C White Mountain, I shot 5 times while hunting. Brought home 5 deer....can't ask for better than that. You like it and it works for you, use it.

T/C makes excellent guns and to date they have a lifetime warranty even to second hand owners.

The White Mountain is handy. The .50 cal is versatile if Wisconsin allows you to use bullets as well as PRB?

I left central Wisconsin as a kid but seem to remember the deer as being lots bigger than the little deer here in Northern California.

If you want another T/C product now is the time to buy as the sale of T/C to S & W may change the product line. Also, on the used market, desireable NLA models will increase in price over time.

Sounds like you might have an "itch" for something else to shoot deer with? :hmm:

The T/C White Mountain Carbine is a fine hunting ML. Your .50 caliber is either a 1 in 20" twist, or a 1 in 38" twist, depending on when it was made. With these twist rates it is right for T/C Maxi-Balls, Maxi-Hunters, or another conical. I own both .50, and .54 caliber WMC's, and like the lightweight carry, and the short 21" barrel, when hunting in the hardwood forests, and when in a treestand. Shots in this part of the world are usually less than 100 yards. The only feature I did not like about the WMC is the rear sight. I changed to a T/C Hunting style Peep on one of mine, and put fiber optics on the other. I get good accuracy using moderate loads of Goex Black Powder, 80-90 grains. You won't go wrong with a WMC !

Had one about 5 years ago and wish I had never traded it. Beautiful wood and VERY accurate but in .54 cal. 3 Illinois deer with it. Wish I had it back!

I think it is hard to beat the feeling of hunting/taking deer with a flintlock replica longrifle with prb and primitive sights, it takes the challenge to the next level useing gear that was used over 200 years ago.

I agree TG, there is more to an ML hunting rifle than just to say "it works", otherwise we'd all shoot inlines. I guess I see rifles of this sort as kinda "in betweens", not quite "modern" but not at all traditional.

Hi Wink,
The carbines are great for hunting from a treestand or a blind. Much more convenient than a long barreled gun. They are also more convenient to carry in the brush and quicker to shoulder.

According to Lyman's Black Powder manual, they don't give up much in the way performance either. About the only issue is decreased accuracy due to the short sight radius. But the shorter barrel time and reduced muzzle rise on recoil should help accuracy; so it might be a wash accuracy wise.

I don't have a WMC but do have a Cabela Carbine which is very similar in terms of dimensions and intended usage. Mine is very accurate with the right loads and is easy to shoot well; so I can't confirm any accuracy disadvantage.

As a practical and effective hunting arm for use on whitetails at modest ranges, I don't think your WMC can be beat. But if you want to impersonate a Mountain Man or a Free-Trapper or take the Way-Back machine into the distant past to pose for photographs, I'm sure there are others here that could suggest something more suitable.
FWIW

I like it for the flat butt. Y'all kin have all the cresent butts you want, I won't stand in yore way. :blah:
Oh yeah, mine has the 38" twist, still ain't decided on a conical for it, but I'm tryin'. :v
