Well, this is so simple that I was a little hesitant about posting it.
I three-plaited the cord from artificial sinew. I got the touch hole pick-in-the-plug idea from a guy at a local shoot a few weeks ago. If you've got your priming horn, you've got a pick with you.
I know there's been some other posts on here that said an attached plug was a safety issue cause folks would leave the plug out and that would leave the horn open to sparks and such, but that's just something y'all got to decide for yourselves. :winking:

those curly maple plugs are sweet lookin' ..did you do those yourself?
cool idea about the pick

Nope, a very good friend of mine did the horns and the plugs. I've got 3 of his horns, and I'm gonna be getting one more for a new fowler real soon.
He does beautiful work, and he lives about 15 miles from me. :winking:

fw707 , while it may seem like a good idea up front , I would not put my powder horn muzzle anywhere near the fire end of a flinter . Personally never had a problem , but if for some reason your gun accidentally discharged you have a hand removal tool . May never happen but I wouldn't roll those dice . My vent picks are under the cheek piece . Convenient and easy to utilize . Just my two cents

pulaski, while i really appreciate your 2 cents worth, I really don't understand what you are talking about.
The only time my horns are near my gun is when I'm priming my pan, and that's after I've swabbed the barrel between shots with a damp patch. I use the vent pick before I load the gun, and after I've swabbed the barrel.
I don't poke around in the vent with powder in the barrel. The vent (touch hole) needs to be cleared before the load goes down the barrel so the charge will be exposed to the flash from the priming pan.
If you need to poke around in the touch hole after you load the barrel to get good ignition, you need to do a better job on your cleaning and keep the old fouling out of the breech face/ touch hole area.
That's just my 2 cents worth.

Hey I am not really into flints, but I like the thinking out side of the box idea you came up with! Looks good too! :hatsoff:

I don't know about the safety situation and FW explanation makes a lot of sense. But I really like the Pick-in-the-plug idea. As cliff said Out-of-the-box thinking. Very nice horns FW.

Or, you could use a brass pick in the plug. Then everybody would be happy...Bud

Well, there's gotta be one in every crowd and it must be my turn.

While I appreciate the innovative nature of this, I do not think that I want my open powder horn up near the pan.

I'll stay with my pick stuck in my hat or on my pouch.
