A wide strap( the width of the band around the neck of the horn where you want to attach the strap) made of tanned deerskin, or even a strip of Chamois clothe, bought in ay auto supply department is all that is needed to wrap the horn securely at both ends. Cut a slit in one end of the strip of leather, and feed the other end thru the slit to make a loop., Now put the loop around the horn and tighten in place. Sew the end with the slit to your shoulder strap and you are ready to go.
My horns are simple, with latigo shoulder straps and loops at both ends. I Pounded the boot lace leather ( Latigo) leather with a hammer, where I wanted to cut a slit, to widen it for this purpose. Then I carefully cut the slit and formed the loop.
I maintain the thin leather straps by oiling them, and checking the loops for any indication of tearing or cracking of the leather. The leather has darkened with age, so that some of the club members don't immediately recognize the strap as boot place latigo leather. One has been on my horn since I bought it back in 1979. I have intended to braid a strap, of something, or buy a nicer strap for the two horns, but have not found the need.
HINT: Deer hide or Chamois clothe can also be used to make loops to fit over the barrel and wrist of the stock of your rifle or shotgun to support a "Hasty Sling", used to carry your gun while your hands are needed to climb steep slopes, or haul a deer out. The sling can be made of anything, and as wide as you want to help distribute the weight of the gun on your shoulder and neck. :hatsoff:
