Hello,

I have these two modern powder horns I’m thinking of selling. I use mostly powder flasks now. I’m not sure who makes them. What are they worth?

While they are good looking horns, there is nothing spectacular about them either. I believe most people like the lighter colored horns but I could be wrong. I'd say in the $30-40 range give or take a little.

$30 to $40 per horn?

Horns are worth what the customer is willing to pay! some people will pay more some will pay less. They appear to be about the same as CVA sold about thirty years ago. Try the Dixie catalog to get an idea of what similar horns are selling for.

I have one of those $15-$20 horns. The stopper is none too secure. I wouldn't be comfortable carrying powder that way walking around. Too easy to have the stopper fall out and drain the powder. Then somebody coming behind me throws a cigarette on the ground and the old Elmer Fudd happens; the flame follows the trail back to me and blows me up!

I have found that running a tap down the horn tip will allow you to "screw" the plug in so it won't fall out. You don't need full thread depth just .005 or so will give you tight enough grip to prevent the plug from falling out. Also it is just good practice to "hang" your horn so that the spout is higher than the base.

My daughter won one of those at a rendezvous a few years ago. It was a prize for the young shooters. At that time it was valued at $10.00. It hangs on her bedroom wall as one of her trophies. :thumb:
