FWIW, there's a chain of large sporting goods stores around here called "Dick's Sporting Goods"...(don't know how geographically widespread they are) and I just learned that they carry boxes of .50cal Hornady .490's for $6.95 right over the counter...that's about as good a normal retail price as I've ever seen around here

RB,

Seems a bit high for post deer season. Our WalMart had them for about 3$ a box. As I cast my own, it was no big deal to me, but I sent others over there that still shoot those squeezed balls.

Roundball,

Dick's sporting goods is big in the northeast. I can think of at least six of them around Pittsburgh.

I will have to check out the round ball deal though. That is a great price.

The original "Dick's Sporting Goods" was a block away from my junior high school. I spent so much of my paper-route money there that they are now a national chain.

The original store no longer sells blackpowder, #11 primers or pistols. I now boycott them. :curse:

Right...understand about one time closeouts...my point was:

I agree with you Stumpy.
I also have spent many dollars at the original store, but won't go into a Dick's store again, even if it means having to drive two hours to get what I want. Since they went corporate they've become less & less hunting/shooting oriented & more of a golf, tennis, & sneaker store. They even seem to try to hide the shrinking hunting department in the most obscure corner they have! Another thing, if they don't have it on the shelf, you won't get from them. Take what they have or you don't need it seems to be their attitude. :curse: :curse: :curse:

I had a similar reaction after visiting a couple here during the past few months...they are basically just large sporting goods "depeartment stores"...catering to the average guy's & gal's interests with no specialization...ie: no Tall or Extra Tall sizes in hunting clothes, etc.

I don't shop at them, but I always poke my head in sporting goods stores if I'm nearby, in hopes they might have a ML section with some great post season clearance sales like Walmart often does

I was just at a mall here in Michigan and the LARGE, and beautiful sporting goods store that used to be a Gallyan's is now a Dick's. That was the only Gallyan's that I was aware of in the state, all high end stuff and pricey. I didn't get a chance to go in, but when I do, I'll check out the lead. Too bad there isn't a buckskinners' superstore chain out there. Well, not yet.

Regards, sse

Gander Mountain was selling boxes of Remington .50 rounds for $2.99 per box of 100. Figured it was a "while they last" deal so I bought several boxes over last summer. Am set for a year or 2 now. :front:

I worked for Dicks Sports in KC area ,you are correct about there hunting dept.over last 5 years it has become a joke. :imo:I have a Cabelas about an hour from me but they seem to high on every thing. Wally world in spring seem to have best prices.

Same thing happend here in Columbus, OH. Gallyans was going out of bussiness and everything was half off, saved me a little money on some bp stuff. Now Dicks, that took over gallyans, has very little in bp and nothing in reloading. Oh well, one less house of sin to go to. :boohoo:

The good news is that with the advent of the Internet, basically anything we want can be ordered from our easy chairs, delivered to your front door in just a few days, no gasoline, no pollution, no parking, no crowds, no clerks, no wasted time, etc...I'd rather take a beating than drive somewhere to buy something now days

I miss Gallyans. I am kind of an impulse buyer. You should see me fight impulses as I cruise through Friendship! :winking:

I have to agree with some of you.. There are 3 Dicks in the Rochester area and the one on the East end looks like a ghost town at times. I was in it yesterday looking for some camo tape for my gun so as not to scare the Turkeys (the feathered ones). Of course they were out of it. I spent a few minutes looking around and about all they have is selected ammo, couple of scopes and a few other doo dads. I was totally UNDERWHELMED. They had more painball stuff than shooting stuff I think. There was a Galyans store too, of course it is Dicks now, Again the hunting stuff is limited. they have tons of safes and sneakers and other sports equipment, but I am still underwhelmed with Dicks. I now generally just go to GUN SHOPS where I know I can find just gun related stuff and not have to find my way past the ski racks, womans clothing, running shoes and golf clubs etc. :curse:

dicks is posibly the quickest se;;out store i have ever seen. wemt in yesterday to see about some balls and such, seems if you are not an inliner your fresh out of luck, dicks should change their name to dicks yuppie goods store the got said that i should move to an inline and i told him i had one of them it was for my wife and that seemd to piss him off, guess he an inliner. the older gentleman behind the counter said to me as i was walking out atleast he knows who the inlines were made for.

When you get hardcore into hunting and shooting like most of us are, at least for me anyway I rarely waste my time even driving across town to Basspro. Most of the time they don't have what I'm looking for. I just order it on-line.
Especially on the traditional muzzleloading supplies..what little Basspro has is ridiculously high.

I agree, Hoyt, that Bass Pro Shop doesn't offer traditional muzzleloaders much. But aren't you close to Buffalo Bills?

I must be lucky. The Basspro in Concord Mills, Concord, NC, has lots of traditional stuff. They carry all the stuff I need includding .315, .451, .454, .457, .490 round balls. They have all kinds of flasks and also holsters and other stuff for my revolvers. Prices range $7 to $9 for 100 balls.

i have no compliaints about basspro shops either but then again i can't really find any sites with great deals. anybody know of some post please.

I go over there every now and then..bought a Rem. New Army revolver from them yr.s ago.
They do have a good inventory..and if in a real hurry I'll drive across town..if not I'll just look around on the net. I have only been using shotgun and smoothbore muzzleloaders and they didn't have the shotgun felt wads I was using for my last two muzzleloaders. I'm not yet the owner of a traditional rifle..still waiting on parts..but when I get it built I will need all the stuff for it and am sure they will come in handy...
Good people to deal with over there.
