I was just given a whole hide of nice leather, the only problrm is that it is that horrible chrome tan yellow. I need it for some projects, but I hate thw yellow color. What to do?

Smoke it! :rotf: (over a fire I mean) :shocked2: Mink oil may change it enought to suit you too.

ship it to me!
I'll make something out of it.
yellow, white, tan, dont matter.

There are a couple of options. You can dye it, just use rit fabric dye and rinse it well. You could smoke it just like finishing a braintan hide. Or you could use a bit of dye remover (just a couple of bucks and found along with the fabric dyes) to tone the brightness down. I have used it a couple of times on some cheeto colored leather and ended up with a nice lightish tan color when done. Just follow the directions on the box.

If it is whats called Lagito(spelling)leather it will rust steel if kept in it. DILLY

Walnut hull dye will temper any color. takes a lot, though. Is this the kind of chrome tan where the flesh side is bright orange?

Soak it in a bleach/water solution. It will take most of the color out, and doesn't hurt the leather. It's how I got the orange-yellow color out of the skin I used for my winter mocs. The color came out a nice light smoke/tan color that I darkened up a bit with walnut to take the "new" off. They have been greased numerous times, wet and dried, and are still going strong after 3 years of hard wear.

Rit dye remover-use about 4 packs per hide, put it in the washing machine, run it thru the wash cycle 4-5 times without letting it go to rinse, then let it run all the way thru the cycles, add a SMALL amount of soap(I use lye soap),run the whole mess thru the washer again-if you want to go further, stretch the hide out on a piece of plywood-staple it down as you stretch-then take a palm sander with some fairly fine sandpaper and sand off the epidermis(the shiny part of the hide)and it'll look like braintan....you can also put it in a walnut dyebath-that'll take the color out also...hope this helps
