Finally finished my ramrod channel, and now I need to drill my ramrod hole. And my question is how deep. I have created some guides, so it will be straight and true, but don't have any :: :hmm: idea as to depth. Anyone got any ideas on this. Don't want to goof it up. got this piece of wood as a prize in a blanket shoot.Split my ball on the axe with my Charleville canoe gun, That I got in trade for a bearskin, that I traded for a chest that I built to trade, and I did it all after visiting about twelve lodges the night before  back in 19 ought 79 at the Feast of the Hunters Moon in Lafayette In. So it means a lot to me Is there a formula for the depth, like barrel length plus two inches or some such.

Bill, if you've got a tab holding the front on the trigger guard with a pin through the stock, that may stop your ramrod. If you can miss that, and sometimes you can saw off the part above the pin and skid the rod over it, or even to one side of it, you can drill back to the tang bolt. This allows the rod to be about 1 1/4" longer than the barrel and not stick out past the muzzle cap.

Bill,
As Herb said the front TG lug can be your stop. That's what I do. You still should be able to have a RR about 1/2" to 3/4" longer than bore depth, which is sufficient.

If you try to go to the tang screw with a 3/8" or larger diameter RR drill drill, you need to be very careful.

Terry

Hmmm, surely the ramrod should be as long as the barrel is deep, so the hole should reach back to the back of the breech plug perhaps? OTOH I could be completely wrong

Depending on the rifle, most rod lengths are barrel deep plus 1/2" - 3/4". This will usually bring you to the lug on the front of the triggerguard. I have at times had to move the lug over to one side or move the RR hole over. You may make it back as far as the tang bolt but I never go that far.

You will notice on allot of old rifles they had 2-3" of ramrod stocking out beyond the barrel. Unsightly to me but it works... However I prefer mine flush at the end of the muzzle.

Thanks for the help guys, that's what i needed It's been a long time since the last build. I don't rwemember what got in the way of building and shooting, but I sure glad to be back with this crew. :redthumb:

If you go to shoulder the gun and see daylight through the buttplate, you went too far.
