I just got a new rifle and I was wondering the best way to break it in. I was also wondering what might be a good accuracy load. It is 45 cal flintlock with a barrel that is 42 inches with a 1:47 twist. Thank you for your time.

The best way is to just shoot it. Many barrels require about 100 rounds to settle down, some do fine right out of the box. Just try to find a load that gives the best groups at 50 yards. For a .45 I would start at about 40 grains and go up in 5 grain increments to see what shoots the best. I would then mess around with the patching to see what thickness does the best. Do this off a bench. Only adjust the sights enough to get you on paper at this stage. Wait until you find the best load before you finish sighting in.

Once I have found a load that will keep an inch or inch and a half at 50 yards I jack the load up to put me on at 100 yards and keep a three inch group. I use that load for 100 yard shooting and hunting.

Mike2005 is right on the money. But I would like to add that the best way to start is to clean that bore to within an inch of its life. Ge all the cutting oil, grit, protective grease and whatever out of there. Then start your load and PRB work up process.

Just shoot the you know what out of it! Also, if this is your first flinter, shooting it alot will get you used to the PHIFFFFT as the "locktime" is longer that in a cap gun. Also goes without saying to bring extra flints, etc. with you just in case you encounter any gremlins :winking: . Let us know how it shoots, all the best, Dave

the only way to know for sure is to send it to me asap and let me break it. I estimate it will take 10 years for me to break it in real good fer you

like some others have said clean the bore good first, bore solvent (kero does OK) and dry patch until clean. I suggest you shoot at 25 yds. awhile with that 40-45 gr 3F load until you 'get the feel of it'

Just remember don't hold your breath too long, and when that cloud surrounds you, breathe deep :) Any reports on how it / you shoot yet? All the best, Dave

Hey every one thank you. That is nice of you to make such an offer paco97. Call me weird but I think I will try it myself

with out a doubt the best results I got was lapping my barrel with Neco four part lapping compound.
It takes three hours and you have a compitition ready barrel.
Pm me if you would like more info.
:hatsoff:

don't stress if I don't get back to you right off I live off the grid and only check my email at the local coffee shop.
