You can get those dark tones on maple by applying Tannic Acid, then Iron Nitrate, then several coats of oil.

yup, this works really well, stock will be a dull black color if done correctly then you rub it back to the darkness/lightness you desire.
you don't have to wear the optivisor to get the same results but some do
