It also could have nothing to do with the stain but the camera and lighting when the picture was taken. Yes - it could be somewhat of a redish/orange color but it might not be as pronounced as what the picture shows. Then again the color maybe true to the picture:dunno: - it does look good either way.

Each piece of wood takes stain differently.
My best guess would be AF, possibly tinted with other stains after the fact.
Maybe some cherry, or Lancaster maple?
The only way to determine how a stock will look, is to experiment.
What are you using for stain now?

Ian,
The figure has to be there for AF to bring it out. Very plain piece of maple.

True, but there is a patch of curl near the nose of the comb that I would think ferric nitrate would have contrasted more had it been used, but there are different concentrations and different methods of application too so who knows.

Dixie used to sell a stain for antique rifles that was pretty reddish. I still have some. I don't know if it's quite that red though.

I use Aqua Fortis The one I am currently finishing has a nice reddish brown color. I put some metal filings in the aqua fortis and let it sit for around 6 months to dissolve the filings, came out with more of a red color when I stained the stock.

Each piece of wood if different. There is not a pat answer. After the ferric nitrate I may use tannic acid then more ferric nitrate. I may use any of the stains listed. To get any specific exact color is not possible if the wood is fighting you. With the LMF stains you can get in the ball park. Some advocate for using the AF and them stopping with whatever you get. Each piece of wood in unique and can be beautiful if stained simply rather than trying to force it to be something else.
