There is a fella with a rifle for sale I found him on this site.It is the rifle I want and seems like a fair deal. But lets face it a person has to be careful these days and I dont feel real secure about sending a money order on the hope he sends me the gun.How can I do this transaction. It should be very simple not needing to go through an FFL dealer

I know how you feel about sending money to someone you don't know who lives a long way from you, but i have done it a lot of times, and also had people send me money for guns i was selling. I think you will find that most of the people involved in this sport are very honest. There is always the bad apple, but for the most part, they are some of the best people you will find. I would give the guy a pm and get his phone number, then call and talk to hin in person if you are leary about it. You cvan tell a lot about a persons character after just talking to them on the phone. :imo:

If it is a fair deal and he seems honest on the phone, I'd say let your gut feelings prevail. Although we can't vouch for everyone here, if he is a regular on this forum and ends up being dishonest, word will get out soon enough...

I've sold a couple guns online and through message boards. What I do is...

1. I (seller) send the him (buyer) a letter stating the fact that I agree to sell him the rifle for an agreed upon price. He keeps the letter and the envelope as a contract. I do ease his mind for if I do not follow through, I am guilt of the felony of mail fraud.

2. The Buyer send me a bank check or Money Order that way the payment is genuine.

Just my two cents, when sending money to purchase a gun, use a US Postal Money Order and send it registered mail with a return receipt. That way if they do try to burn you, they are guilty of mail fraud and you have all the proof you need to prosecute. :m2c:

Highgain, if you are thinking about buying one of Zonie's guns, I am sure it is worth it's weight in inlays . As far as Zonie's reputation, I am sure you might find some"one" around here to vouch for him. Anybody?

You can tell a lot about a person from their posts too. It the fellow has been registered on the forum for a time then claude, Musket Man, or one of the other moderators may have communicated with him at length. Send a few private e-mails and get some references.

I can not imagine anyone on this forum ripping off a fellow member (at least for more than $1.29).

I'll bet there have been thousands of dollars worth of knick-knacks mailed back and forth between members at no charge to anyone. Generous to a fault, we are!

I am always amused with people that sell stuff on E-Bay. If you send a personal check, they want to hold it for a week or two weeks to make sure it doesn't bounce. They don't trust your check (your honesty), but now they have the merchandise and your check, and they expect you to trust them to send the merchandise?

Hey, the seller doesn't know you from Adam. Don't confuse respect with trust. I'll give anyone respect, so long as they don't prove that they don't deserve it. But, in any day or age, trust has been something you have to earn.

I'll share my campfire, doesn't mean I'm not sleeping with one eye open.

I've been doing business on Ebay since 1999, both selling and buying. In that time I've aquired 6 negative and 461 positive feedbacks to date.

My negative feedbacks came from those that attempted to cheat me. :shake:

Take a good look at a person's feedback, whichever auction site they may be on. Be sure to examine not only their negative feedback, but also take a close look at the person who left the negative feedback.

One person that left me a negative feedback has 44 negatives! :curse: :shake:

I also have sold and bought on Auction Arms and the Gun Broker.

All in all its a shot in the dark.

I buy and sell on Auction Arms. In all the time i have been doing it i have only had 1 person take my money and not send me the item. Thankfully it wasn't a big item. I have bought a couple of guns that were not as advertized, but thankfully the seller took them back and i was just out the shipping costs. I try to give a fair and accurate description of what i sell along with the photos. I have found that all and all, most of the people who are actually in this sport are honest people, but then you have the ones that aren't in the sport and just take a ML'er in now and then or pick one up cheap and want to re-sell it. Most of these people are honest too, but not always. Like Claypipe said, Check the feedback.

I buy and sell on ebay quite a bit.
Mostly good dealings.
As a buyer,, got burnt once. (this person is no longer allowed to "trade")
(as a seller) Had one the other night call (?) and wanted out of a deal because they said their room mate placed the bid (doesn't figure,,,but..) I simply said forget it. send me an e-mail describing why you want out of the deal and that'll be that. They did,,,, and I did.
Sometimes payment can be slow for whatever reason though. :results:
