My pal gave me 3 cow horns that are curved more than normal. He boiled them and the core would not come out. Anyone ever have experience with hard curved horns?
Thanks

Boil them and the cores should come out. There will be addition internal cleaning as well.
Do this outside on a camp stove or such.

Just boil the horns for a good long time. Then hold the horn by the tip and give the base a good sharp whack on something like a stump. The core should just slip right out.

And do it outside... :idunno:

I got a nice surprise recently. A year ago a friend gave me a pair of large buffalo horns, cores still in place and way past "sour" smelling. Egad. Wrapped them good and tossed them in the freezer to clean someday.

Picked a nice breezy day and set up the Coleman stove outside, prepared to light it and run. Dropped one of the frozen and thawed horns and the core popped right out. Thumped the other on a stump and it popped too. No boiling. Of course, with that special perfume they were packing I went ahead and boiled them awhile. Cleaned them and boiled them again.

Take it as a sign my wife still won't let them in the house! :rotf:

My friend boiled them for over an hour and whacked them. These are not mildly curved horns, they are almost a c shape.

Try screwing a large eye hook or lag into the core before boiling. Pull as necessary

Let them age unrefridgerated for 3-4 days then boil again for an hour or two. Should come out.

I have had good luck by packing the horns in salt for a week or two and letting the salt dry out the horns. Then the cores fall out with a tap. The salt also absorbs some of the smell!.

Yep, drying usually works. But I would suggest more like 3 - 4 weeks.

In case somebody missed the above admonishments, NEVER, EVER, BOIL THEM IN THE HOUSE!

If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!

BUT he didn't tell ya that his lovely wife Clair hit him on the head with them and the cores still didn't fall out .

sometimes horns, especially real old horns will, will have shrunk around the core at the base..drop back about 1/2 inch or so[that real rough section] and cut, just the horn, not the core, all the way around and then try the boiling method..should work..

also,to clean the inside-prop up the horn and fill with 'CLOROX' for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse with water..this will take all the crud and scale out..
