Both!
Next time I intend to put a hole through as well for a nail to fit through and help pull the rod if required.
Mind you that is at the other end....
Read about this somewhere on this Forum and it seems like a great idea.

Both..
Ive also found a small flat will allow air to escape with the epoxy - doesn’t really matter where the flat is.
If it helps, Sent these photos to a friend last year of one I did.
Good luck.

If you ever wondered what would happen if the jag fell off during a match, and remained over the loaded patched ball, and you didn't notice it....I can tell you. The recoil will be substantial, and if your 50 yards from the target, and your aim was good, you'll have 2 holes in the target....one round and one that looks real strange.

Cant see the button or jag adding much more recoil to worry about . Once speared a Salmon with a 40 odd inch rod atop of a 50 cal ball (The ram rod being siezed by rain ) The cleaning rod I carried in the bore was the 'spear '. I camped on Tesitika river bar ( Vancouver Island ) which splashing was the Salmon otherwise been non . Ball made two holes in the salmon but didn't notice much recoil overly , rather spoiled the rod though .

Yah, recoil wasn't that bad, just that it seemed to be in two distinct stages. Don't know why that would be either.

what size hole do you drill to put a pin through
I use a piece of 1/16" brass wire I buy at the local hardware store for the tip pin.
The reason I don't use anything larger is because there is a limited amount of wood that fits into the metal tip and drilling a hole larger than 1/16" will weaken it too much (IMO).

Here's a link to a post I made about pinning a ramrod tip in place.
