How much powder do you normally carry in a hunting day or trip in the woods? Do you have a favorite hunting horn?
Billk

When hunting deer I carry a small tubular shaped brass flask that I keep in my possibles bag. It holds enough black powder for about 10 shots. If I am hunting and need more than this I need to get my eyes checked. :v

When hunting i have the rifle loaded and then stuff 3 or 4 speedloaders in my jacket pocket along with the capper. I hate carrying alot of stuff on me when hunting. Weighs you down and just catches on every brush you walk past.

On my first BP deer hunt, I went into the woods with my main horn full of powder, my priming horn, my possibles bag filled with all kinds of stuff, and a day pack to carry a sandwich, extra hats, gloves and rain gear, water, candy bars, gorp, rope to drag the deer out, compass, fire starting materials and equipment, a towel, and God knows what more. Today, I leave the priming horn home. I prime with my main powder. I carry a few tubes with premeasured powder charges in them. I rarely take the possibles bag any more, instead putting a few thing in a pocket of my coat. And the main powder horn rarely makes the trip either. My daypack has been trimmed down in weight, but still carries too much stuff. I am reluctant to take out more because I have seen the temperature change up to 50 degrees in a few hours, and a sunny day turn into a gale and driving rain in minutes. But the daypack at least has two wide shoulder straps, and is easy on my shoulders. Without the bag and horns, and all that extra weight, I really think I have this thing I call hunting licked. I do carry water and either soup or some kind of fruit drink, which I vary every other day, in addition to the water, maintaining fluids particularly if you get injured, is vital for survival, and the extra food, and fire starting gear is the best way to get help to you, and stay warm while you wait. For a half day hunt when I am not going to be more than a mile from my car, I don't carry the day pack. Everything goes into pockets.

 sounds like me when i was younger. used to pack the entire gun closet/dresser and only end up using 3 or 4 items. I have one of the smaller size camel back backpacks. Fill it up half way, space blanket, map of unit im hunting, flash light, lighter,2 skinning knives,a few extra caps " or primers :blah: " A pen to fill out my tag with, if i fill it that day, and a few feet of 3/8" rope. Oh and some trail mix/granola bars. Possibly a couple sandwitches if i know i'll be out all day or on a long hike. It really works my nerves when i see brother and pap loading up all kinds of stuff and over packing.

I carry 2 30-06 cases full of 3F sealed with a small cork and a small brass flask with a spigot-valve full of 3F, and 8 balls wrapped in patch and tied with sewing thread in a pill bottle. and my neccesary items of course.

I have a small horn with a brass valve that I made, it holds enough powder for about 15-20 shots - more than enough for a hunt. It fits in a coat pocket. I use this horn all the time.

I have a horn and hunting bag for each gun, I guess the horn holds about 1/3 of a pound of powder...I also have a powder measure and ball block on a leather thong for easy reloading...In the pouch I have about 25 balls and a wooden pill box with extra greased patches, my wingbone turkey call, extra flints, a short starter, a supply of cleaning patches, a cleanng jag and ball/patch puller.

For deer hunting, I load the gun before I leave the truck and stick a tube with a pre-load in my pocket. Carry a capper or priming flask depending on the gun, my belt knife, and I'm good to go.

For squirrels, there's liable to be more shootin', so I carry a small bag with a CVA field model flask, balls, patches, etc.

I, too, got over the backpack full of junk phase. If it dont fit in a pocket leave it in the truck.

My favorite horn holds just shy of one pound of powder. That's what I carry. Full of 3F that I use as prime and main charge in my .54 flintlock.

I have, blush, hunted with five pre-loaded speed loaders that each hold 90 grains with my percussion rifle. I carry them in an October Country belt pouch. Very handy, but not keeping with tradition.

I carry about half a pound in a full sized horn most of the time. It has spent so much time tucked under my right arm over the years that I just don't feel right without it. I have a brass CVA flask, but the horn always seems to be my choice.

My pal Soggy made me a beautiful flat priming horn, that I have changed the spout on, to better handle the FFg I use in my .50. I'm not sure how much it holds, but I have fired 10 hunting loads without running out. Since my ball board only holds 6 PRBS, I'm sure it's plenty. :v

I load the rifle before I walk out the door. In a small pouch I carry 5 speed loaders extra caps and a few patches. Normally never shoot more than one shot, but from my old infantry days I also don't want to run out of ammo.

Most of my hunts were also treks - so I carried a full horn and all the stuff I would normally carry if I was out for a week or more.
