What would be the proper stain or dye for a hickory ramrod on a Isaac Hines / Bivens / 1770 era Lancaster school rifle?

dye with water soluble aniline?
cure in coal oil for a month, ah-natural?
stain with alcohol based stain?

:hmm:

well, darn-it. I meant to post this to builders bench. Hey sysop! kindly move this thing over to builders bench please. :peace: :master:

Well, right, wrong or indifferent, I use BC Walnut stain.

Much to the disgust of some of our members I suppose, I have also been known to apply the stain in a spiral pattern.

Fearing the wrath of those who claim that nothing before the 1850's had such a pattern, I won't go into my method (unless asked). :: (Just kidding about the wrath. This site has the greatest people around on it and very seldom does someone really hostile). ::
