Well the title basically says it all. How do you all carry cheeses for multi-day treks (2-3 days most)? Also what cheeses are best for this purpose?
 
Hard cheddar keeps well - especially the type in a wax cover. Most of the other types get too mushy. Of course, it goes without saying that you should pack it in "cheesecloth". ::
 
Personally, I prefer Gouda .... I've made up linen bags that I've melted beeswax into with an old iron (don't use the wifes for sure) :nono: then tie with a leather thong.
 
Try Manchego, it's a hard dry Spanish cheese made of sheeps milk. It's really tasty and keeps well.
 
goat and sheep cheeses are the best. Like Claude said, Romano is an excellent choice. Just look for anything that says "pecorino". Romano, like most hard cheeses, is actually better when you let it dry a little. Crumble a little into your pail when you make rice, you'll thank me later.

I'm with Desert Rat on this one. (Mainly because I introduced him to it). Manchego is great cheese to travel - Hard, Dry, and aged. Tastes somewhere between a sharp cheddar and a hard swiss. Doesn't sweat oil as much as cheddar does in the heat. Also, another spanish cheese Vino de Cabra (sometimes sold in the US as 'Winey Goat'). A hard goat cheese that has its rind washed in wine turning the rind purple (cheese is white). Both are pretty old styles of cheese that might approximate period. I think (from what I know of cheese) that most period US cheeses would be like Irish Farmers cheese which is somewhat like a cross between cottage cheese and mozzarella. This wouldn't keep very well on the trail unless smoked.

Probably would keep the bugs away or draw every one of them for miles around :haha:... smelly stuff :shocking:
