I'm working on a Lyman kit. I thought the wood was dark enough to go without stain, but after 3 coats of truoil I've decided that it's lighter than I want. Is there a way to get the truoil off so that the wood will take stain? Are there any other tricks that can darken the finish w/o removal of the truoil?........jbrent

There is a product, brand name Watco, which is a good oil and also comes in many wood shades. I have used it many times and it will darken your wood depending on what color you choose. It is sold in most hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowes, Tru Value, Ace, etc.Being an oil it should go right over your truoil and will dry to a hard finish. I would let the try oil dry really good first and rub it with fine steel wool, dust off well, then apply a coat and see if it's the shade your after, if you need more color, follow the first steps again. :front:

Try dark brown oil leather dye. I use Fiebings, brand not important. It will probably go right through your finish. You could test it inside the barrel channel.

I have used brake cleaner and steel wool to remove a tru-oil finish. You dont need to re-sand or whisker with it's use. Some may give a reason not to use it but I have used it to remove grime and old finish on many old guns.
