New forum member here. I am interested in building muzzloaders, mainly pre flintlock era. Problem is I have no idea on how to get started, no equipment and no knowledge.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get started? Thanks for any help.

Wheelockhunter,
I have never made a preflintlock rifle, but before I built my first flinter, I never even thought I could build one. I would say the first place to start is to do some research and get some info and pictures of what you actually want to build. Then you need to start figuring out where to get, or how to make the parts. If you check with some of the other builders out there, you might even get lucky and get a drawing. Once you have your rifle built in your mind or better yet on some paper, you need to tweak the rifle to fit you. Trigger length pull, butt drop, sights etc. You are still in the planning stage. Once you have a good plan go with it. You will make mistakes, but nothing ventured nothing learned. Go slow, think ahead, ask questions, don't work blind (going in a direction and having no idea where or how it is supposed to end up)
Patience, perservence, and research should get you a rifle to be proud of.
