How to get the shiny off new horn (cow?)

I picked up some nice-looking horn cups that I was planning on making a possible rum horn and salt horn out of. They are way too shiny for me. Is there any way to get the shiny/polished look off and still keep the integrity of the horn in place.
 
I figured there might be different answers especially from the horners out there.
I know it sounds like a no brainer, thought about sandpaper and or steel wool. I guess it can't hurt.
