Have seen lots of great horns, and some excellent posts. I am just starting out and wondering about some good reference materials on making horns....what are some good ones on start to finish for a beginning horner?

Scott Sibley's book, "Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn". It's available from Track of the Wolf.

There's also some tutorials and YouTube videos around. Do some Internet searching.

+1 for sure ... the Sibley book will get you hooked on making horns (now you've been warned ...

by the way, if you want to soften the horn, hot water will not work - it doesn't get hot enough ... you need veggie oil at about 325 to 350 degrees ... I got a 'fry daddy' from the local WalMart, but you could probably get one at a yard sale or auction or flea market ...

good luck with your project!

thanks for all the great information, can't wait to get started.
And we have another convert.....poor fellow, he has NO idea that he will never see daylight agin....then there's the lathe needed for turning ends, then searches for horn materials, studing old horns on the net....getting a myriad of strap materials, buckles, lacewings...etc etc.....

And then we hangs these things everywhere when done....so you have, blanks, parts, tools, finished ones :youcrazy:

Then there's the rifles... And bags...." You can't make just one of ANY of this stuff" :surrender:
