Hey fellars, (I include women in the term fellers) I have a Case triple X knife. It is the smallest of the leather wraped handled fix blade knife. I have used this knife for years. It's sheath is the earlier version with the strap with a snap on it. Well that snap is fixin to break. I bought two for my brother's this past christmas and noticed the sheaths are made different now. I would really like to make a new sheath for this knife. Could one of you maybe direct me to a link that could help or maybe a good book on this type stuff. Thank ye kindly.

I'm not sure about a link for that particular style, if you want to dupe the original. I can't find it right now, but some time back there was a thread right here on the site on making center-seam sheaths with excellent responses and photos. Try "center-seam" in the search function to see what you get.

The only place I know of for making your original style is at Tandy, and the kits they sell are likely to be too large for such a small knife. If you got one of Tandy's basic snap setters, you could do most everything else with a scrap of leather, awl, needle and linen thread.

Wish I could be more help, but surely this will help prime the pump for you.

If you want to reproduce the old sheath and you don't want to keep it then its pretty simple.
Just split the seam on the old one and flatten it out on a piece of paper, use some heavy stuff like a file folder, trace around it and you will have a pattern. I would use a 7-8 oz veg-tanned leather. If their is a Tandy store close to you I am sure they would be happy to show you what you need to get started and they have books and patterns for most anything.
Good luck,
Ron

Great point on using the original for a pattern Hawkthrower. Somehow in the back of my mind I lost track of the fact he still has the original.

First time ever I've lost track of anything and I promise not to do it again. Ever. Now, what were we talking about?

Gettin old is tough, real tough! :rotf:

Leather workin ain't for sissys either. You'll have miners hands before too long. I pittled with it this weekend. I believe I will take both of ya'lls suggetions. I think I will use the original and trace me a new strap and get one of those snap machines. I was a a little dumb for thinking of making a whole new sheath when 99 % of the original is fine. Now I will just have to find some leather. Thanks fellers.

I was told recently that there are two things that happen to you when you get old. One is your memory goes, and ...I can't remember the other.

It'll set you back a whole $10 for the tool and 20 snaps.

If you're like me, pretty quick you'll be looking for things to do with the extra snaps, and that will require more leather. And once you have the extra leather you'll need a few more tools to use up the extra leather. And once your hands heal up a little, you'll buy bigger pieces of leather cuzz your projects have grown. And, and, and.... :rotf:

Actually, when you play with leather you'll learn to appreciate hand lotion. Even when you don't draw blood with needles and awls, you'll bleed from cracks in your fingers without it.

I just finished building a briefcase requiring over 12 feet of saddle stitching. Went through a whole lot of lotion, I can tell you!

I can believe you. I wallered and grunted with that little knife sheath for two hours just trying to remove that little strap. I guess all them times being sunk in streams while hanging on my hip caused it to shrink. I should have treated it some how I guess. Yeah, A man can use thst tool and extra straps those things are on dang near everything and are always wearing out. Whoop, here comes my wife, can't let her see I'm thinking of buying a new tool, until its done bought that is, ya'll take care.

Boy, does that have a familiar ring. I just bought another muzzleloader, and my wife is sure to know when she finds the freight bill on our Fedex shippers account! Maybe I'll tell her before then, but there is kind of a deadline on doing it.

The only way my wife lets me get another gun is if I build it. I think she's hoping I'll get tired of doing that. :rotf:
The last time I bought wood for a stock she said "another gun??!!"
But I can't live without her.

Once upon a time I could "sweeten the pot" by telling her it was for her to use too. But since I started concentrating on lefties, the jig is up. :bull:

My little city slicker doesn't shoot. She's terrified of those things that go BANG!!
THey say opposites attract... :surrender:

Fortunately my wife and I agree on the hunting and fishing stuff (she grew up in a family sporting goods store), but "opposites" couldn't be any further apart in the rest of our lives.

Mike you gotta watch them little city slickers. If ya ever get them started they wind up beatin ya everytime somebody hangs a target  :shocked2: :rotf:
Ron

Ron, I don't think I have to worry. We've been married 25 years, and she hasn't changed a bit. :( So my shooting, no matter how bad, my reputation is safe with her, at least.
Get those antlers, yet?
