With the planned Memorial Day activities and the forecast of possible severe storms this afternoon, I figured that if I wanted to try my new Pedersoli Howdah Hunter, I better get up early and get to the range at first light. It was a grand morning to be out, and, I had the place to myself. I was really impressed at the big smoothbore's accuracy and power. Mine is the 20ga X 20ga model. This is quite a pistol. I settled on a load of 35 grains of FFF Goex with a .600 ball patched with .018 greased linen patches. The lube I used was Old Zip, for no other reason than I have plenty of it. After a few initial sighters, this 6 shot group at 25 yards shows an extreme center to center spread of 5.5 inches. I used the same 35 grain charge with 2 paper shot cups of 1 1/4 oz of #5 shot with 3 over shot cards over the powder and 1 card over the shot cartridge and it printed 30 bb hits within the 12" diameter scoring rings. This pistol is a hoot to shoot. The only problem I had is that with my small hands and the double triggers, the trigger guard wants to keep peeling the hide off my middle finger. Gonna half to work on that. The Howdah is pretty massive and I also have to experiment with ways to carry it. Cabelas sells a holster, but, I'm thinking the gun is a little heavy for belt carry. Perhaps a bandolier type rig like guys use for the big Thompson Center Contenders would be the way to go.

Great guns - I have the 20X20. I have done some loads with buck and ball - makes an awesome little hall sweeper.

Good shooting, I know guys that can't do that with a modern revolver. I've settled in with a 40gr load for my 20ga using a .610rb and .010 patch. I wear thin leather gloves when shooting it for the same reason.

If you find a bandolier-type holster, or a maker of the same, could you post about it? I am thinking of getting one of these pistols when I get back to the US this summer, and would like to have a holster like that that would hold both the howdah and a large bowie for hog hunts.

hi,
i'm using the '.58' howdah and purchased one of these bandolier holsters when they were on sale for $19 or so.

they're durable, adjustable, well made but now the max size is only 10 1/2" which might be ok if you want a few inches of the grip exposed.. without the exposure, it makes fast crossdrawing rather difficult, so that might be a plus after all.

now that i look at these, mine is slightly different.. it has a longer, single, over-shoulder strap with a belt loop to keep it anchored and prevent excess movement..

finding one that is long enough for those double barrels *and* not cost a small fortune is a real challange.

---cabela's choices---

good luck,

I seem to recall there was a gentleman offering to make a holster, in the classifieds. His ad is no longer posted and I can not remember his name. Perhaps he will chime in?
Best Wishes

Thanks, I am hoping to find one in leather, but if I have to I guess I could always have it made.

LeMatt,
I just bought my .58 cal howdah from Cabela's and I'm wondering how many grains of powder to put in? D.P. suggests 24grs. but that seems a little light. What are you using?

In one of my past posts,I was planning to make a Howdah holster. I am putting the finishing touches on one as I type this. It is hand tooled with a 1.75 in. belt and a leg strap. I will put up the pictures tonight...shadowalker

My son has a .58 cal, and he finds that a .570 round ball backed by 45 gr. black powder does the trick. It's a bit heavy but not to punishing on the hand.I hope this helps...shadowalker
