Howdy all! I'm new to the posting thing but not new to this site;I have been lurking for the last 9-10 months. It all started with a double barrel percision shotgun that I traded for.The only markings I could find where: A W SPIES,and the only thing I know about it is it's from around 1868 and spies was an engraver. This gun has lead me on a journey that has been most enjoyable. It started with wanting to use said gun for this past spring turkey hunt, well that lead to wanting to do it in dress from that period, which lead to this great site.Well after this site I wanted a flintlock so I bought a Traditions Penn.50 cal.and a 36 cal flint this also got me intrested in the F&I War and Rev. war,so I went to E-bay and started buying a bunch of stuff(which by the way is all wrong, should have listened to you guys about buying anything before I decided on a persona)I'm also buying used bp guns at the local gun shop(around 8 in all to date. Now I have all these guns and 1 pound of BP which I used up on patterning the shot gun,no problem I'll just run down to the local gun shop and buy a pound or two yea!! right!!any way it's now August with all these guns and no powder even after a few trips to Penn. and a search
of every gun shop within 100 miles of home... no go; even serched on Long Island! Well there was one shop about 40 miles away but they wouldn't have black powder(they did)Now it's sept. so I sight the 36 cal. in for small game. Two inch groups at 25 yds.Right about this time I'm at work and break my little finger on my right hand now in a full cast to my elbow and only the thumb ,index and middle finger 1/2 usable :curse: By the way I am right handed. The cast should come off this Fri. if all is well I'm all set but there is the possiblity that they will have to pin the bone(I sure hope not)
This journey has also lead me to take up blacksmithing (built my own forge and assembled enought tools to turn out a few items)I also just joined a F&I reenactment club, The Third Ulster.I also took up powder horn building and I'm working on my 3rd or 4th horn now,and making all my own accroutments. This winter I want to build a smoothbore I just havn't figured out what kind.I'm having a lot of fun researching and reading about these time periods that I'm just about ready to sell all my mordern guns.
Sorry for the rambling on of this intro but not too many people around locally are into this. Now just a quick personal info.I'm 41,married for 12 years with two chrildren ,one boy age 6 and a girl age 3.I'm a third generation decoy carver and in the late 80's early 90's I was very active in the decoy competitions.I was originaly from Long Island NY now I call the Catskill mountains home.I'm a care taker for a 110ac. estate here in the catskills with a 130 yd shooting range.I enjoy all kinds of hunting and fly fishing.I've hunted ducks from Maine to Maryland.Spring turkey is my main stay now with this year being one of my most memorable, two birds with that BP shotgun one over 21 lbs.My fishing has taken me from Long Island bass fishing to the Bahammas bone fishing also did some rod and reel fishing for Giant Blue Fin Tuna off of cape cod; have about 12 to my name with my biggest at around 800 lbs.Well I have gone on long enough. Now that I have started posting you will probably not be able to stop me.I just want to say that this forum is just the greatest you guys are the funniest and most knowledgeable around(although this hobby has cost me the most out of all my hobbies I'm having a great time with it!)
Thanks for taking the time to read this ....Pete
P.S.I posted a question yesterday about a book site IDSAbooks.com it's on the general board any help would be appreciated thanks

I feel your pain. I gave up and ordered from www.powderinc.com NY doesn't forbid selling powder, but you have to build a $10,000 locker with impossible storage restrictions. :curse:
